Different kind of protection against pollution exist, but each of them has its own characteristics. Here is an overview of the different solutions you may find on the market.

Surgical masks

20061201-img_3300_small.jpgSurgical masks that you have probably already seen worn by Chinese in the streets are not suited to protect you against air pollution. The main reason is that these masks are designed to protect others from droplets you might spread.

When these masks are tested, the filtration is measured from the air you exhale and not the one you breathe. Even if they can slightly reduce the risk of infections through droplets, they are definitely not a suitable solution against pollution.

One-time use mask

These masks are light weight and economical for occasional one-time use. However, because of the disposable design, they don't last long and the accumulated cost can be rather high if one needs to use them on a regular basis. It could become too warm and humid soon after the mask is put on.
Rather for occasional one-time use (DIY activities or pollution peaks in european countries for example).

Gas maskGas mask

Not very practical for urban use since it is bulky and looks way too scary to be used on the streets.
Only to be used in very specific environments or conditions, and rarely even designed to protect against all the pollutants in the air. Definitely not a good solution for common urban use.

Urban type anti-pollution mask

Repro urban anti-pollution maskThe urban type anti-pollution mask is reusable and easy to breathe through. It is more stylish and therefore less scary in public space than other masks. The urban type mask is more expensive than a One-time use mask, but it is reusable and more comfortable.

The following table sums up the pros and cons of the different masks.
