| Compare Beijing with the world! |

I was preparing it for quite a long time and it is finally ready: you can now use this website to compare the pollution in Beijing with the pollution indexes in other parts of the world. For now, you can "translate" Beijing air quality using the indexes of:
If you want additional cities or places, tell me which city and possibly the link to the website on which I can find the pollution indexes. An upcoming evolution is also to add more Chinese cities. Comments

Do the same air quality laws apply in every city in the U.S.?

pollutionchina, maybe get your facts straight? 232 isn't considered slightly polluted. There is a whole database that I just checked and it can be traced back for years and years. The index right now in China is 88, which is no worse than LA in the US...

Sorry, my initial comment is very confusing as I am rather tired and ready for bed, but if you look at the SEPA numbers for 2007, China surpasses 200 ug/m3 a total of 6 times in the entire year, where you get 100 is beyond me?

By China I mean Beijing, dammit!

Yes, there is a national standard for air index that applies for all the U.S.. You can find more information on this page: http://airnow.gov/index.cfm... and even more precise data on that one: http://www.epa.gov/air/crit... . I'll soon give more details on the calculation made here.

It is clear that average pollution is much much higher in Beijing than in most cities in Europe or in the US. I do not know for Atlanta or Ostende, but in whole Paris, the maximum of particle matters since 2000 is 232µg/m3. In Beijing, such levels are considered as "Slightly polluted" and are exceeded in average more than 100 days per year! You comment is good and shows that we are not aware of the real difference in terms of pollution.
It is possible to retrieve concentrations from index, it is actually how the comparator works.

Do Belgians in Ostende (heavy industries), Americans under the influence of Atlanta airport emissions, or Parisians living close the busy ring road breath air of better quality than most of the expats in Chaoyang residences??.. I guess it's not so clear.
Your results bring us as far as a 10 yrs-old child would go by himself, just looking at the TV. It'd be more interesting now to get into more details: Real data, resolved in space, would be nice to see. Especially if you intend to discuss health effects that cannot simply be assessed from averaged figures. I heard it's possible to retrieve pollutants daily average concentration from the index. Without tha, if it's made to frighten people, it works! What else? |
